Camera Audio Box - The story behind the scenesOk, lots of you may wonder what exactly is this and why do you need an audio box on your bike.
Well, surely this is not for music reproduction while riding your bike as most of you will think ,BUT it is exactly the opposite: It is for recording the sound of the bike! Since I love capturing some of the moments I spent on my motorcycle I have a vast amount of videos (raw and edited) in my pc, all of them with the same problem. The wind sound is actually blocking the engine/exhausts sound which is really important to get more of the feeling of the moment during the ride. Watching videos in YouTube and having some constructive discussions with some people online, gave me the idea to record the sound onto another device which will be dedicated for this task only. |
So, the idea was to have a device either on me or on the bike that will record the sound. I think that the closer to the sound source (aka the motorcycle) the better. The first thing I had to do was to decide on the equipment needed. Here was my initial thought: A cheap voice recorder (I wish I had the budget for a more expensive recorder) and a microphone with long cable that will be put close to the exhaust.
The first problem At first I though that having a sensitive mic would give better and clearer results. NO. WRONG. NOPE. The result is exactly the opposite, as the excessive sound input creates an overexposure thus a loud noise. I then had to improvise and intervene on the microphone to reduce its sensitivity.. |

I then had to find a space where I should install my equipment. I therefore decided to make a plastic case that will protect my recording device and microphone that will be put underneath my rear case rack... I started with an old screws plastic box similar to this on the right. It offers a sealed environment plus it is the perfect size for my needs. Of course inorder to make it less visible to the naked eye I had to paint it black..

Using an old sound-proof sticker I had for my pc-case I created a more secure for scratches environment for my recording device
Placed on the motorcycle...
Tiding up the cables and placing the microphone under the seat, close to the exhaust...
Ready to ride ...... :)
